What To Wear For A Maternity Session
Congrats, mama-to-be! What an exciting time! And the perfect way to document your pregnancy is with a maternity photoshoot. Now it’s time to plan your outfit! Preparing for a maternity session is an exciting milestone, and choosing the right outfit is a crucial part of the process. What you wear has a ton of impact on the result of your final photos!
Comfort Above All: Comfort comes first, especially when you are pregnant! You may be walking, sitting, and possibly laying down during your session, so consider a dress that allows you to move freely.
Movement: Flowy dresses create movement in a picture that jeans and a t-shirt just can’t do. This creates more dramatic, eye-catching images that are sure to stun!
Consider the season: Be sure to choose a light, breathable fabric in the warm summer months and a warmer fabric in the winter months.
Coordinate, Not Match: Coordinate outfits for your partner (and children, if you’re not a first time mom) for a cohesive look without going matchy-matchy. Choose complementary colors and styles for everyone, and consider a pattern or texture on at least one person to add some depth to the photos.
Accessorize Smartly: Accessories can be almost as important as the dress itself. Adding some jewelry, a bonnet, or a cardigan can change the tone of the entire outfit. Layering your outfits with accessories adds depth to a photo.
Shoes: I always recommend boots (or other closed-toed shoes) if you will be somewhere that could potentially have stickers or snakes. If you will be at the beach, no shoes is the easiest and my favorite look!
Think about the final result: Will you be hanging these photos on your walls? If so, you may want to consider the decor in the room when choosing the color of your outfits. Do you want these photos to coordinate with the newborn photos, so that you can put them in an album together? If so, begin planning your newborn photo shoot outfits as well to ensure that the sessions have similar styles.
Your maternity photoshoot is about capturing a real and beautiful moment in time, so let your outfit reflect that. Above all, make sure you feel beautiful in whatever you’re wearing, as your happiness and comfort is the most important thing for a successful maternity session!
